There’s a reason why people pay so much for Head Tracking devices for Flight Simulation (often hundreds of dollars), it’s because they truly redefine your relationship with the simulation. Your immersion into the cockpit and how you interact with the simulation’s world is entirely different when every tilt of your head is reflected on your screen. Rather than controlling a simulation’s perspective, the simulation’s and your perspectives meld into one unified experience. We’ve written a few articles about head tracking various addons for this exact reason, but thus far everything has felt a bit ad hoc. But we can assure our readers that todays solution is an excellent solution for those who don’t want to spend hunreds, yet want to experience the immersion of headtracking and TrackIR in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The app is called SmoothTrack and is available for iOS and also available for Android (although the Android release is currently in open beta). While it certainly isn’t free ($9.99 USD), it’s a quality app that achieves a great deal of the functionality of a fully fledged out trackIR system at 3% of the cost - a great bargain if you ask me.
After you’ve got SmoothTrack installed, you’re going to want to install OpenTrack for free, via Github (link below). Follow the instructions in the app that outline how to setup the connection between OpenTrack and SmoothTrack and before you know it, you’ll start seeing your perspective in the simulator reflect where you’re looking in real life.
